WHITNEY OAKS GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Rocklin, CA, USA
Designed by Johnny Miller

Whitney Oaks Golf Club sits in Rocklin, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills northeast of Sacramento. The course was designed by Johnny Miller, the former PGA Tour star and major championship winner who turned to golf course architecture after his playing career. Miller's design work in Northern California during the 1990s and 2000s often emphasized strategic shot-making and incorporated the natural rolling terrain characteristic of the region.
The layout at Whitney Oaks takes advantage of the foothill topography, with elevation changes and native oak trees shaping the playing corridors. The routing moves through the property's natural contours, requiring golfers to manage uphill and downhill lies while navigating doglegs and strategically placed hazards. The course reflects Miller's playing philosophy of rewarding accuracy and course management over pure distance, with multiple routes available on several holes depending on skill level and risk tolerance.
Whitney Oaks operates as a semi-private facility, offering both member and public play. The course serves the growing Rocklin and Placer County golf market, an area that has seen residential development expand significantly since the 1990s. The property includes practice facilities and a clubhouse typical of Northern California golf developments from this era. The course provides a year-round playing option given the region's Mediterranean climate, though summer temperatures in the foothills can be warm.
Reviews
Decent course. Quirky layout with some tight lines off the tee from the tips. Greens were really good for the price and winter conditions. Could be better with some updated bunkers and better tee box choices. Fairways get a lot of abuse as most tee shots end up in the same area.
Johnny Miller design (tough) pretty tight off the tee. Interesting course winds through hills and canyons. Might be too hard for beginners but I enjoyed this course
