WESTFIELDS GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Clifton, VA, USA
Designed by Fred Couples, Gene Bates
Westfields Golf Club, nestled in the rolling hills of Clifton, Virginia, echoes with the ghosts of presidents past – rumored to be a favored retreat for Eisenhower and Nixon. The Morrish and Weiskopf design presents a modern interpretation of parkland golf, where generous fairways belie the strategic demands placed upon approach shots. This is a course that rewards bold play off the tee, only to tighten its grip around the greens, demanding a deft touch and precise club selection. Favoring a draw, the course's subtly contoured greens and bunkering complexes are meant to be challenged with the ground game - a difficult task in the humid East Coast summers.
The course saw the inaugural International played from 2000-2002, an innovative stableford scoring event during its brief run in the PGA Tour rotation. While it may not boast the storied history of its more heralded peers, the club’s commitment to classic golf traditions is palpable. Westfields’ layout emphasizes playability for members of all skill levels, while still offering a stern test from the championship tees.
Beyond the course, Westfields fosters a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere amongst its members. Renowned for its robust member-guest events, the club is a hub of social activity that centers around a shared love for the game. The hearty post-round fare in the clubhouse, particularly the Maryland crab cakes, is another hallmark of the Westfields experience.
