THE WESTERWOOD HOTEL AND GOLF RESORT
🏴 Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, Scotland
Designed by Dave Thomas, Severiano Ballesteros
Westerwood occupies a hillside site in Cumbernauld, roughly midway between Glasgow and Stirling in Scotland's central belt. The course was designed by Dave Thomas in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros and opened in 1989 as part of a hotel and golf resort development. The routing takes advantage of the property's elevated terrain, offering views across the surrounding lowlands and incorporating natural changes in elevation throughout the round.
The design reflects both architects' influences: Thomas brought his experience in strategic course architecture, while Ballesteros contributed creative shot-making demands and green complexes that reward imagination and touch. The layout features a mix of parkland and moorland characteristics, with mature trees framing several holes while others play across more open ground. Water comes into play on multiple holes, and the bunkering style combines traditional pot bunkers with larger, more modern hazards.
The course measures over 6,600 yards from the championship tees and has hosted various regional and national amateur competitions over the years. The property's hotel component makes it accessible to visiting golfers, and the course serves both resort guests and local members. The terrain provides natural movement in the fairways and creates a variety of stances and lies that test shot-making ability. The greens are generally well-contoured, reflecting Ballesteros's preference for surfaces that demand precise approach play and careful reading.
