West Surrey Golf Club sits on Enton Green near Godalming in the Surrey Hills, occupying heathland terrain that characterizes much of the region's finest golf. Herbert Fowler designed the course in 1910, working with land that features the sandy soil, heather, gorse, and mature woodland typical of Surrey's golf corridor. The routing makes full use of natural elevation changes, with holes moving through valleys and along ridgelines that provide views across the surrounding countryside.

The layout measures just over 6,000 yards from the back tees, playing as a par 68 with only two par fives. This shorter yardage places emphasis on accuracy and course management rather than length, with several holes requiring precise positioning to navigate the heather-lined fairways and avoid the mature trees that frame many playing corridors. The greens are characteristically firm and contoured, demanding thoughtful approach play. Several holes feature significant elevation change, including approaches that climb to elevated putting surfaces.

West Surrey has maintained much of Fowler's original design intent through the decades, preserving the strategic character he built into the routing. The club operates as a traditional members' club with a relatively small membership, and the course sees limited play compared to many modern facilities. The clubhouse occupies a prominent position overlooking the course, and the club maintains the understated atmosphere common to older English heathland establishments. The course remains walkable despite its terrain, with caddies available for those who prefer them.
