West/South Course
Fernandina Beach, FL, USA

Fernandina Beach Golf Club operates two nines—West and South—designed by Ed Matson and Tommy Birdsong. The course sits on Amelia Island, Florida's northernmost barrier island, where the coastal landscape provides a setting of maritime forests, salt marshes, and tidal influences characteristic of the region's transitional zone between the Atlantic coast and inland waterways. The West and South combination reflects the design sensibilities typical of courses built to serve both residents and visitors in northeast Florida's coastal communities. The routing works through terrain that includes elevation changes modest by barrier island standards, with holes framed by live oaks, palmettos, and native vegetation. Water features—ponds and tidal areas—come into play on several holes, requiring strategic decisions off the tee and on approaches. Fernandina Beach Golf Club functions as a semi-private facility, offering memberships while also welcoming outside play. The club serves the local golfing community on Amelia Island, an area known for its historic downtown district and resort amenities. The course provides a straightforward test suitable for a range of skill levels, with enough length and hazard placement to challenge better players while remaining accessible to recreational golfers. The clubhouse and practice facilities support both daily-fee rounds and member activities, fitting the operational model common to Florida's coastal golf properties that balance tourism with year-round local play.

This course layout was very ho hum. Not memorable at all - the fairways and tee boxes could use a shave - a bit fluffier than your usual fairway and tee box setup. Feel like they could’ve done more with the plot of land they had since it’s right across from the beach but it won’t blow you away in the slightest
