SOUTHERN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Tulsa, OK, USA
Designed by Ben Crenshaw

The West Nine at Southern Hills Country Club represents Ben Crenshaw's contribution to this storied Tulsa facility, originally designed by Perry Maxwell in 1936. While Southern Hills is renowned for its championship East and North courses—which together have hosted seven major championships including multiple U.S. Opens and PGA Championships—the West Nine provides additional playing capacity for the membership and serves as a complement to Maxwell's original routing.
Crenshaw, a two-time Masters champion who transitioned into golf course architecture with partner Bill Coore, brought his deep appreciation for Golden Age design principles to this project. His work at Southern Hills reflects the rolling terrain characteristic of the property, situated in the Osage Hills region south of downtown Tulsa. The routing incorporates the natural elevation changes and wooded corridors that define the club's landscape, maintaining continuity with Maxwell's design philosophy of working with existing landforms rather than imposing artificial features.
The West Nine allows Southern Hills to accommodate its membership while preserving the championship courses for tournament preparation and member play. The club's facilities support a traditional country club culture, with Southern Hills maintaining its reputation as one of the premier private clubs in the region. The addition of Crenshaw's nine holes expanded the club's golf offerings while respecting the architectural heritage established by Maxwell nearly a century ago.
