KENNEDY GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Aurora, CO, USA
Designed by Henry Hughes
Kennedy Golf Course's West/Creek combination represents one of three 18-hole configurations at this municipal facility in Aurora, Colorado, designed by Henry Hughes. The course opened in the 1970s as part of the city's effort to provide accessible public golf to the rapidly growing Denver metropolitan area. Hughes, a regional architect active across the Mountain West during this period, created a layout that works with the relatively flat terrain characteristic of the High Plains east of Denver.
The routing incorporates natural drainage corridors and modest elevation changes, with mature cottonwoods and other native vegetation defining holes and providing wind protection on Colorado's exposed prairie landscape. At roughly 5,800 feet elevation, the course plays with the reduced air resistance typical of Front Range golf, affecting club selection and distance control. The West and Creek nines combine tree-lined fairways with more open stretches, and several holes feature water hazards from the creek systems that give one nine its name.
Kennedy serves a diverse local population and hosts regular municipal tournaments and junior programs. The facility's three-nine design allows for varied playing experiences and helps manage the heavy traffic common to affordable public courses in major metropolitan areas. Conditions reflect the challenges of maintaining bentgrass and bluegrass in Colorado's semi-arid climate with temperature extremes and intense sun exposure.
