WINGED FOOT GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Mamaroneck, NY, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast

Winged Foot’s West Course stands as a formidable monument to championship golf, its demanding character etched into the very fabric of American golf history. The course, nestled in the rolling terrain of Mamaroneck, presents a stern test where par is always a worthy score.
A classic example of Golden Age architecture, the West was conceived by A.W. Tillinghast. Its strategic bunkering, crowned greens, and subtly contoured fairways demand both power and precision. Rees Jones has overseen significant restorations, ensuring the course maintains its strategic integrity while adapting to the modern game. The fairways favor those who can work the ball both ways, and the course rewards strategic placement over raw power.
Winged Foot has hosted numerous U.S. Opens, including memorable victories by Bobby Jones (1929), Billy Casper (1959), Hale Irwin (1974), Fuzzy Zoeller (1984), and Geoff Ogilvy (2006), and most recently Bryson DeChambeau (2020). These championships have added to the club's storied past and have cemented its place as a true test of golf.
Beyond the course, Winged Foot maintains a vibrant and exclusive membership, known for its passionate golfers and rich traditions. A standing lunchtime tradition is the club’s famed “Winged Foot Burger,” a culinary staple that fuels countless rounds and post-game analyses. It remains a course held in the highest regard, a testament to classic design and championship pedigree.
Reviews
A take people won’t like….if the rough isn’t at your shins and you are a halfway decent putter, it’s not that hard. I’m a mid single digit and shot 79 with a soul shaking hozel rocket on 9. With the back and forth and the west and east running through each other at times, you can kinda hit it anywhere. No water. Hit driver, go find it, hit it again near or on the green. Repeat.
So much history. Best greens in golf
great time
Winged Foot West is awesome. Conditions are always fantastic, design is challenging but also leaves the player the opportunity to run the ball up to most of the greens. Bunkers are deep, greens are sloped. A championship test for anyone.
Maybe the ultimate championship test. If these aren't the best greens in the country I guess someone will need to get me to ANGC to change my mind. I like East more (better land, more strategy) but I don't fault people for wanting to play the US Open course more. I'd go 7/3 East if I had ten rounds to split between the two.
🐐.
