Maidstone's West Course, a defiant rebuttal to the manicured perfection found elsewhere, thrives on the raw, untamed spirit of the East Hampton coast. This is golf where the Atlantic's breath shapes every shot.
Herbert Leeds's original vision, a product of the Golden Age, hugs the rumpled dunes, rewarding creativity over brute force. With revisions by the firm of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the layout embraces the nuances of its sandy terrain. Its narrow fairways demand thoughtful placement, with prevailing winds constantly testing club selection. Long and winding, the course favors players capable of working the ball in either direction, navigating subtle doglegs and deceptively placed bunkers that appear to grow organically from the landscape.
While lacking the national championship pedigree of its more decorated neighbors, Maidstone holds a revered place in the Hamptons' social fabric. Membership is intensely coveted, blending old money East Hampton families and the city’s elite in relaxed, understated competition. It’s a place where scorecard bragging rights take a backseat to the camaraderie of a shared post-round lunch. The club's understated elegance and the West Course's engaging challenge have long drawn a membership deeply rooted in the area's history and traditions, making it one of the most exclusive and sought-after memberships.
Reviews
This plot of earth was made for a golf course. That’s the bottom line. Amazing place.
Short and outdated by today’s standards if the wind is calm. However, this is a course I could play every single day for the rest of my life and never get bored. The whales breaching off the back of the 18th green doesn’t suck either.
It’s a vibe. Like playing golf on the beach. Top notch club from beginning to end. It feels more like a beach club than a country club. If you’ve played The Creek then it’s like playing the holes at the bottom by the water but instead there’s 18 of them. I can’t wait to go back.
