BERMUDA RUN GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Bermuda Run, NC, USA
Designed by Dan Maples, Don Charles

The West Course at Bermuda Run Golf Club opened in 1973 as part of a residential golf community in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, roughly midway between Winston-Salem and Statesville. Dan Maples, who would become one of the Southeast's most prolific architects, designed the layout with assistance from Don Charles during the early phase of his career. The course occupies gently rolling terrain characteristic of the North Carolina Piedmont, with tree-lined fairways moving through mature hardwoods and pines that frame the holes and define playing corridors.
The routing makes use of the property's natural elevation changes and incorporates water features on several holes, creating variety in both visual presentation and strategic demands. Maples designed the course during an era when resort and residential layouts emphasized playability for a range of skill levels while maintaining enough challenge for competitive play. The West Course has served as the primary championship layout at Bermuda Run and has hosted regional amateur events over the decades.
Bermuda Run developed as a member-owned club with a focus on family recreation and social activity, typical of Piedmont-area clubs that emerged during the residential golf boom of the 1970s. The facility includes multiple courses and amenities that serve an active membership. The West Course represents Maples' design sensibilities from this period—strategic bunkering, generous landing areas balanced with penalty for wayward shots, and greens that reward accurate approach play without excessive severity.
