WEEQUAHIC PARK GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Newark, NJ, USA
Designed by George Low

Weequahic Golf Course, a defiant green jewel in the heart of Newark, bears witness to the democratization of the game in the early 20th century, a time when accessibility trumped exclusivity. This publicly owned parkland course, carved into the Weequahic Park's rolling landscape, presents a surprisingly stout test despite its unassuming nature. While not overly long, Weequahic favors those who can shape the ball, rewarding strategic positioning over brute strength, with many doglegs and subtly contoured greens guarding par.
Designed by the lesser-known George C. Thomas Jr., rather than his more celebrated cousin of the same name, the course was later refined by famed architect A.W. Tillinghast. While Weequahic doesn’t boast a roster of major championships, it holds a special place for generations of Newark golfers. Its fairways have seen countless rounds from players who grew up just steps away, their dreams fueled by the game.
The club’s true legacy resides not in accolades or tournaments, but in the deep-seated community ties forged within its park boundaries. It is a democratic hub, where the spirit of the game triumphs over pretense, and the love for Weequahic Golf Course burns brightly in the hearts of those who call it home.
Adding to the lore of Weequahic is the rumored connection to the iconic movie, "The Godfather." Legend has it that portions of the park served as filming locations, adding an unexpected layer of Hollywood history to this unassuming yet cherished community institution.
Reviews
This is a post-renovation review. Although the course still needs to grow in some, the county did a tremendous job with the renovation. It’s a short and straightforward course so don’t come to be challenged. Excellent value at $60 to walk.
