WATERLEFE GOLF AND RIVER CLUB
🇺🇸 Bradenton, FL, USA
Designed by Ted McAnlis

Waterlefe Golf and River Club occupies a residential community setting in Bradenton, on Florida's Gulf Coast south of Tampa Bay. Designed by Ted McAnlis and opened in the early 1990s, the course was developed as the centerpiece of a master-planned neighborhood along the Manatee River. McAnlis, who worked extensively throughout Florida during this period, routed the layout to incorporate the region's characteristic wetlands, lakes, and native vegetation while accommodating the residential parcels that frame many holes.
The course plays through relatively flat terrain typical of western Florida, with water hazards factoring into play on a majority of holes. McAnlis positioned lakes and preserve areas strategically to define landing zones and green approaches, creating risk-reward scenarios that reward accurate iron play and course management. The design reflects the era's emphasis on playability for a range of skill levels while maintaining enough challenge for competitive club events. Native grasses and palm clusters provide visual definition and frame views toward the river corridor.
Waterlefe serves primarily as a private club amenity for the surrounding residential community, hosting member tournaments and social golf throughout the year. The facility includes practice areas and clubhouse dining that support the neighborhood's recreational focus. The course represents a typical example of Florida's residential golf development from the 1990s, balancing strategic design elements with the practical requirements of community golf in a subtropical environment where water management and maintenance considerations shape both routing and playing conditions.
