WATCHUNG VALLEY GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Watchung, NJ, USA
Designed by Alec Ternyei, Seth Raynor
Watchung Valley Golf Club, carved into the rolling hills of northern New Jersey, represents a strategic and challenging layout that, while relatively young, embraces a classic sensibility. The inland course, absent the raw beauty of ocean, but presents tight fairways and elevated greens protected by deep bunkers that demand precise approaches rather than brute strength. One might find that attempting to bomb driver all over the course results in a day of frustration.
Designed by the esteemed Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course opened in 1990 and has since matured into a respected test of golf in the metropolitan area. Its design subtly favors a controlled fade off the tee. While Watchung Valley hasn't hosted major championships, it’s a favored venue for regional amateur events and state-level qualifiers, contributing to the competitive spirit of New Jersey golf.
The club maintains a convivial atmosphere, known for its membership that values both the traditions of the game and the camaraderie shared on the course. A unique tradition at Watchung Valley is the annual "Member-Guest" tournament, celebrated not only for the golf, but the surprisingly competitive horseshoe tournament that follows each round. And like any club that embraces its own eccentricities, their club events like the horseshoe tournament makes Watchung Valley special to the men and women that represent the club.
Reviews
Watchung Valley Golf Club continues to get more notoriety after an extensive restoration plan brought to life an unbuilt Seth Raynor routing, constructed after his death by Plainfield Country Club’s Marty O’Laughlin, revealing the rolling topography and bold features on the site of this old dairy farm. A number of Raynor’s templates can be found here, particularly on the back nine, including the 11th (Eden), a standout par-4 12th (Bottle), a rare par-3 punchbowl 13th and the prize-dogleg 16th. An emphasis on walking and firm-and-fast conditions, plus a new short course with six greens dubbed the Merry-Go-Round, designed by Blake Conant (the club’s current consulting architect), gives this character-filled hidden gem a great sense of place.
A really interesting course that has completely changed over the years with some much needed investment. They removed a ton of trees which really allows for better views and firmer conditions. A solid Raynor that will keep improving with time. Drainage is a real issue here, every time it rains the course struggles mightily.
