The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a Jack Nicklaus design situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Arden, North Carolina, approximately 15 miles south of Asheville. The course occupies mountainous terrain at elevations ranging from roughly 2,200 to 3,200 feet, making it one of the higher-elevation layouts in the region. Nicklaus routed the course across ridgelines and through valleys, incorporating significant changes in elevation that define the playing experience and provide views across the surrounding mountain landscape.

The design features the dramatic topography characteristic of mountain golf in western North Carolina. Several holes play along exposed ridges while others descend into wooded corridors, and the routing includes both uphill and downhill shots that require careful club selection and an understanding of how elevation affects distance. Natural rock outcroppings appear throughout the property, and Nicklaus incorporated these features into the strategic design. Water comes into play on multiple holes, and the bunkering follows Nicklaus's preference for large, visible hazards that frame landing areas and greens.
