WAIALAE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Honolulu, HI, USA
Designed by Seth Raynor

Waialae Country Club exists as a living testament to golf's enduring allure in the Hawaiian Islands, having fostered the growth of golf in the state since its early origins. Set against the backdrop of Honolulu’s affluent Kahala neighborhood, the course embraces a classic, relatively flat design with broad fairways that encourage aggressive play. Don’t let the gentle terrain fool you; strategically placed bunkers and the ever-present trade winds conspire to challenge even the most seasoned golfer. A favorite of shotmakers, the course doesn't favor any particular skill, though it does help to avoid the Bermuda rough.
Originally designed by Seth Raynor in 1927, Waialae bears his trademark geometric bunkering. In the modern era, renovations by Desmond Muirhead and Tom Doak have softened some of the original severity while preserving the course's fundamental character. The result is a harmonious blend of classic strategy and contemporary playability. The course’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean adds another dimension, with several holes directly bordering the coastline, providing stunning views and the occasional gust of sea breeze.
For over half a century, Waialae has been home to the Sony Open in Hawaii, one of the PGA Tour's early-season stops. This continuous presence has cemented its reputation and allowed generations of golf fans to witness thrilling moments played out against the backdrop of Diamond Head. The atmosphere is distinctly relaxed, reflective of the Aloha spirit, yet the competition remains fierce, attracting top players eager to test their skills.
Beyond the professional spotlight, Waialae maintains a strong sense of community among its membership. The club is as much a social hub as it is a championship venue. Its unassuming clubhouse holds stories and memories that have built a unique identity for Waialae among Honolulu’s elite. And while formal course records are closely guarded, the stories of improbable shots and improbable wins shared over post-round refreshments are just as cherished.
