VIRGINIA BEACH NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Virginia Beach, VA, USA
Designed by Curtis Strange, Pete Dye

Virginia Beach National Golf Club opened in 2000 as a collaboration between Pete Dye and Curtis Strange, the two-time U.S. Open champion who grew up in Virginia. The course occupies a relatively flat, wooded site in the coastal plain near Virginia Beach, where Dye's design philosophy adapted to the regional landscape of pine forests, wetlands, and sandy soils. The routing incorporates natural water features and created hazards that define strategic options throughout the round.
The layout reflects Dye's characteristic emphasis on visual intimidation and strategic variety, with railroad ties, pot bunkers, and forced carries appearing alongside more traditional elements. Strange's involvement brought a player's perspective to shot values and green complexes, particularly in creating multiple routes to accommodate different skill levels. The course measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, though multiple tee boxes allow for varied experiences across a range of abilities.
Virginia Beach National operates as a semi-private facility, offering both membership and daily-fee access. The course serves the Hampton Roads golf market and attracts visitors to the Virginia Beach area seeking a modern championship-caliber design. Its conditioning and playability have established it as one of the region's more prominent courses since opening, though it has not hosted professional tour events or major amateur championships. The design represents a notable example of Dye's work in the Mid-Atlantic coastal region during the late 1990s development boom.
Reviews
Was my home course for ~2 years and they keep this place in top shape 9-10 months out of the year. Really great layout with some fun holes. In peak season, I don’t think I played on better greens.
