VICTORIA GOLF AND COUNTRY RESORT
🇱🇰 Digana, Central, LK
Designed by Donald Steel
Victoria Golf and Country Resort sits in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, approximately fifteen kilometers from Kandy, near the Mahaweli River and the Victoria Reservoir. Designed by British architect Donald Steel and opened in the late 1990s, the course occupies a dramatic hillside site characterized by significant elevation changes and dense tropical vegetation. Steel routed the layout to take advantage of the natural topography, with holes that climb and descend through the forested terrain and offer views across the reservoir and surrounding highlands.
The course measures over 6,500 yards from the championship tees and features narrow fairways carved through jungle-like growth, with monkeys and other wildlife frequently visible during play. Water comes into play on several holes, both from natural streams and the reservoir itself. The design requires accurate shot-making rather than pure length, as the steep slopes and thick vegetation penalize wayward shots severely. The greens are typically small and contoured, reflecting Steel's traditional design sensibilities adapted to the tropical setting.
Victoria has hosted professional events on the Asian Development Tour and other regional circuits, serving as one of Sri Lanka's primary championship venues. The resort setting includes accommodation and dining facilities that cater to both international visitors and local members. The climate in the Central Province is somewhat cooler than the coastal regions, though the course remains playable year-round with appropriate consideration for monsoon patterns.
