BARNHAM BROOM GOLF CLUB
🏴 Norwich, Norfolk, England
Designed by Frank Pennink
The Valley course at Barnham Broom Golf Club occupies gently rolling farmland in the Norfolk countryside, approximately ten miles west of Norwich. Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in the early 1970s, the layout takes its name from the natural valley that runs through the property, creating elevation changes uncommon in this predominantly flat region of East Anglia. Pennink, a prolific British architect of the mid-twentieth century, routed the course to make use of the existing topography and mature woodland that frames several holes.
The course plays through a mixture of open parkland and tree-lined corridors, with the River Yare valley influencing the character of the lower-lying holes. Water features prominently on several holes, and the routing incorporates strategic bunkering and undulating greens typical of Pennink's design approach. The layout offers variety in hole length and direction, with doglegs and elevation shifts providing visual interest and tactical options from the tee.
Barnham Broom operates as a hotel and leisure resort, and the Valley course serves both members and visiting golfers. The club also features a second eighteen-hole course, the Hill, which was added later to expand the facility's golf offerings. The Valley remains the older and more established of the two layouts, hosting regional amateur competitions and corporate events. The setting provides a relatively secluded golfing experience despite the proximity to Norwich, with views across the Norfolk countryside from the higher points on the course.
