TROON GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Scottsdale, AZ, USA
Designed by Jay Morrish, Tom Weiskopf

Troon Golf & Country Club sits in north Scottsdale at the base of Pinnacle Peak, occupying high Sonoran Desert terrain that defines the character of Arizona golf. Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed the Monument Course here in 1986, carving fairways through natural desert washes, granite outcroppings, and stands of saguaro cactus. The routing takes full advantage of elevation changes and the dramatic topography, with holes playing across ridgelines and down into arroyos. Views extend across the Valley of the Sun to distant mountain ranges.
The design philosophy emphasizes strategic shot-making over forced carries, though the desert landscape demands accuracy. Fairways are generous where the land allows, but miss them and recovery becomes difficult from native desert vegetation and rock formations. Greens are large and contoured, reflecting Weiskopf's preference for rewarding approach play and creating variety in short game situations. Several holes play along or across natural washes that cut through the property.
Troon became the flagship property for what grew into Troon Golf, one of the largest golf management companies in the world. The club maintains a private membership and has hosted various regional amateur competitions over the decades. The facility includes a second eighteen holes, the Pinnacle Course, added later to the property. The clubhouse and member amenities reflect the upscale character typical of north Scottsdale private clubs, with dining and social programs centered on an active golf membership.
Reviews
Beautiful setting that weaves through the canyons of Scottsdale. Very impressed with some of the mounding and use of fall lines and false fronts to create a linksy feel. Some questionable design choices on a few par 5’s and long par 4’s where the fairway runs out around 280-300. That being said, excellent match play venue for the mid-am, and the course was presented very well by the USGA.
