TOTTERIDGE CLUB
🇺🇸 Greensburg, PA, USA
Designed by Rees Jones, Steve Weisser
Totteridge Golf Club, nestled in the rolling hills outside Greensburg, Pennsylvania, has quietly cultivated a reputation as a challenging and engaging layout for decades. This course, with its mature trees and gently undulating terrain, bears the hallmarks of classic parkland design, rewarding strategic play rather than brute force. Its routing presents a balanced test, with holes favoring both fades and draws, requiring thoughtful club selection and precise approaches, especially on the inward nine.
Originally designed in the late 20th century, Totteridge has seen subtle refinements over the years that have kept its character intact, without attempting to drastically alter the original intent. While the club hasn't hosted major championships, it remains a popular venue for regional amateur events and local qualifiers, fostering a competitive spirit among its members.
More than just a golf course, Totteridge thrives on its unpretentious atmosphere and tight-knit community. The club is also known for its hearty post-round fare, particularly the locally sourced kielbasa at the turn, a tradition cherished by its membership, who often gather on the patio after their rounds to recount the day's triumphs and tribulations.
Reviews
I have played this course 80-100 times dating back to 2006. Totteridge as it was originally constructed was intended to be an elite private course capable of hosting USGA type events; in it’s current iteration it is a really solid public course that offers a ton of interesting golf and value for those who get to play here. Around 50% of the original fairway and greenside bunkers were turned into grass bunkers but playing the course as it currently stands there are still plenty of hazards to navigate to keep your attention especially when the fescue is up. The course still tips out at 7100+ but unmaintained tee boxes exist for it to play at ~7400 yards. Over the course of the round you cover a decent bit of elevation change both up and downhill but most of the holes play on stairstepped tiers that play along the most severe slopes. The exceptions to this are the dramatic par 5 7th and par 4 17th which play straight downhill from the highest points on the property. The maintenance staff maintains a squared off edge to the mouth of the green surfaces which is a cool look that may be an homage to Oakmont. My biggest criticism is that other than the front most of the rest of the green surrounds all repel shots, you can’t get creative with approach shots. I know it’s not as spectacular as Olde Stonewall but Totteridge is my favorite public course in the Pittsburgh area and I think a lot of it has to do with the finishing stretch. The cadence of the round sets up great for drama, avoid disaster on 16, try and drive 17, keep the wheels on at 18. Definitely recommend playing here if someone is within road trip distance.
While technically a hour outside of Pittsburgh many consider this a pittsburgh public track. The drive can be a bit of a hassle for a weekend round but it’s well worth the trip. An expertly designed track Rees jones weaves through the hilly terrain providing incredible views and unique holes. The course plays firm and fast similar to a links track but danger lurks off every fairway. If the rough doesn’t stop your ball it’s likely heading towards the ever present thick layer of fescue that the course is infamous for. The par 3s and 4s are memorable and varied but Totteridge might have the best collection of par 5s for a public track in western PA. The par 4 17th has deservedly gotten lots of praise (it’s literally a cliff side tee shot) but I find the par 5 7th to be the best hole on property. The practice facilities are top notch (one of the best putting greens I’ve ever seen) and the green sites are exceptional. The main complaint levied against this track is its difficulty. Please play from the correct tees and please go in with the right attitude (not losing ball here is a major success). For under $100 year round Totteridge is a must play and arguably the best golf value in the state of PA.
