TOBACCO ROAD GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Sanford, NC, USA
Designed by Mike Strantz
Tobacco Road isn't just a golf course; it's a rebellious act of artistry carved into the heart of North Carolina's sandhills. This modern marvel defies convention, demanding a unique perspective and rewarding audacious play.
Designed by the late Mike Strantz, Tobacco Road, near Sanford, embraces the area's rugged, former sand quarry terrain with dramatic elevation changes, cavernous bunkers, and blind shots that challenge even the most seasoned golfer. Errant shots are punished, while strategic risk-taking is rewarded with scoring opportunities. Don't be surprised when you find yourself hitting an iron off the tee and pulling driver into a par 4.
While Tobacco Road has never hosted a major championship, its reputation for its distinct challenge attracts golfers from across the country, drawn to Strantz's bold vision and the unforgettable experience the course delivers. It is a pilgrimage of sorts to be sure.
Beyond the course itself, Tobacco Road has earned a cult following for its commitment to pure, unadulterated golf. You will find few houses, just hard golf, and a reminder of the game’s inherent difficulties coupled with it’s beautiful possibilities. And while the course may not be for everyone, those who embrace its eccentricities often find themselves returning again and again, eager to explore the next challenge on this unforgettable golf journey. The club prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere, offering a haven for passionate golfers who appreciate the challenge and the unique camaraderie found amidst the sandy expanses.
Reviews
Tobacco Road is a ton of fun and probably the most relaxed golf atmosphere (including your local muni) in existence. You roll up, drop your clubs, park, and check in to one of the more welcoming environments I’ve ever experienced. The folks are genuinely happy to have you on site and seem just as excited as you are to play the place. Ther is no OB and they encourage you to drive in the bunkers. WILD. A ton of blind shots and the pace of play is a little slow. But overall, fantastic conditions, firm greens, tons of sand, tons of fun. Go with your most chill golf friends and have a blast!
Phenomenal shape. Visually stunning. Play the slopes. Enjoy the rustic vibe.
They let us play til dark! Unreal place with an elite potential for creativity
Some of the craziest holes you’ll see and some absolute killer greens
Bucket List
Minus the rain and 5 and half hour round of golf because the group in front was atrocious and slow the golf course is amazing!! For February the greens were so good and the golf course lived up to my expectations I had for it. So glad I got to play it.
I fully understand this course isn't for everyone but for what I enjoy about golf this is the most fun golf course I've ever played. The bold enormous features within or along each hole make each individual hole very memorable. Yes, there is eye candy every hole that is meant to be visual distraction/intimidation but the course itself is really not that difficult after the first time around. The same way blind hazards can ruin a golfer's mood, the blind safety areas at Tobacco Road do exist once you know where to aim. Specific shots here that I think about often are the tee shot on #1, the decision #5 tee, the approach up into #9, the mega-line over the trees on #13 tee, and the approach up into #13. For someone who has never seen the course I honestly think it would be best to know nothing about the place prior and just experience it for what it is, but with its popularity rising that is a tough ask. It seems like photos really don't show the scale of the place and for anyone who hasn't played Tobacco Road it really should be on anyone's must-play list (at least once)
The uniqueness alone is worth the visit, a lot of fun to navigate and see things you will not find anywhere else. Much easier the second time around, and i understand why higher handicap players may not like it, not hard to get stuck in some spots and have to pick up. If you like fun, you’ll love wacky tobaccy.
played the course 15 years ago about 2010. amazing and one of a kind. must play list !
The most unique golf experience of my life
