THE VIRGINIAN GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Bristol, VA, USA
Designed by Tom Fazio

The Virginian, nestled in the rolling hills of Bristol, Virginia, proudly carries the torch of classic golf design, a testament to a bygone era when strategy and natural contours reigned supreme. Carved from the Appalachian foothills, this course plays through dramatic elevation changes, rewarding thoughtful club selection and precise approaches. The undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers favor a strategic, rather than purely powerful game. While generous in width, wayward drives can easily find themselves swallowed by the course's dense surrounding forests.
Tom Fazio's design ethos is readily apparent throughout The Virginian. His mastery of shaping the land, creating both visually stunning and strategically challenging holes, is on full display. His routing takes full advantage of the area’s natural beauty, weaving through wooded valleys and across elevated ridges, offering breathtaking views at nearly every turn.
Known regionally as a challenging yet fair test of golf, The Virginian fosters a community of dedicated golfers drawn to its classic design and serene setting. It’s a place where a shared love of the game is passed down through generations, with casual games or even competitive stakes for its die hard members who rarely, if ever, leave their zip code.
Reviews
The Virginian is a great course if you get the chance to play, do it! The only bad thing was when I played their greens weren’t the best due to some weather and maintenance issues.
