THE RENAISSANCE CLUB
🏴 Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland
Designed by Tom Doak
The Renaissance Club occupies a stretch of linksland along the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, Scotland's renowned golf coast. Tom Doak designed the course in the mid-2000s, opening in 2008 on a site that had previously been farmland. The property sits between North Berwick to the west and Muirfield to the east, placing it within one of the world's most concentrated corridors of historic links golf. Doak routed the course to take advantage of natural dune formations and coastal views, creating a modern links that follows traditional principles of ground-game golf while incorporating contemporary design ideas.
The layout runs primarily out and back along the shoreline, with several holes playing directly beside the Firth of Forth and others moving through more elevated duneland. The course features wide fairways that encourage strategic choices off the tee, with the wind from the water influencing play throughout. Green complexes incorporate significant contour and fall-offs, characteristic of Doak's design approach. The par-three 15th plays along the water and is among the more photographed holes on the property.
The Renaissance Club joined the European Tour rota in 2019 as a co-host of the Scottish Open, alternating with other East Lothian venues. This tournament rotation has raised the course's profile within professional golf. The club operates as a private members' facility but accommodates visiting golfers, contributing to East Lothian's appeal as a destination for those exploring Scotland's links courses beyond the most famous names.
