THE RAVINES CLUB AND LODGE
🇺🇸 Middleburg, FL, USA
Designed by Ron Garl
The Ravines occupies a distinctive piece of land in northeast Florida's Clay County, where the terrain departs notably from the region's typical flatness. Designed by Ron Garl and opened in the late 1990s, the course takes its name from the dramatic natural ravines that define the property's character. These steep-walled gullies, carved over centuries by water erosion, create elevation changes uncommon in Florida golf and give the layout a topographical variety more associated with courses in the Carolinas or Georgia.
Garl routed the course to emphasize these natural features, with holes playing across, along, and down into the ravines. The elevation shifts produce forced carries and approach shots to greens set at varying levels, requiring golfers to adjust club selection and trajectory throughout the round. Mature hardwoods and pines frame the fairways, and the ravines themselves are often left in their natural, wooded state, adding both visual drama and strategic consequence to wayward shots.
The Ravines Club operates as a private facility with an associated lodge, serving a membership drawn from the Jacksonville area and seasonal residents. The course represents one of several Garl designs in northeast Florida, where the architect built a regional reputation for working with the area's varied terrain. The property's natural features and relative seclusion give it a character distinct from the coastal resort courses that dominate much of Florida golf.
