THE SAN ROQUE CLUB
🇪🇸 San Roque, Andalucia, ES
Designed by Perry Dye, Severiano Ballesteros
The New Course at San Roque Club opened in 2003 as a collaboration between Perry Dye and Severiano Ballesteros, adding a second championship layout to this Andalucian golf resort. The course occupies rolling terrain in the hills above the Mediterranean coast, with views extending toward Gibraltar and across to North Africa on clear days. The routing works through cork oak and olive groves, incorporating the natural elevation changes of the landscape into a design that emphasizes strategic variety over length.
Ballesteros brought his competitive experience and understanding of shot-making to the design process, while Dye contributed architectural structure and routing expertise. The result is a course that rewards creativity and course management, with multiple tee positions allowing different angles of approach and several risk-reward opportunities throughout the round. Water features appear on several holes, and the bunkering style reflects both American design influences and European strategic traditions.
The layout plays to a par of 72 and stretches over 6,700 yards from the championship tees, though the course's character comes more from its variety of hole lengths and green complexes than from pure distance. The conditioning typically reflects Mediterranean standards, with fairways and greens maintained to accommodate year-round play in the region's mild climate. San Roque Club serves both resort guests and members, with the New Course complementing the older Dave Thomas-designed Old Course on the property.
