THE MUTTONTOWN CLUB
🇺🇸 East Norwich, NY, USA
Designed by Alfred H. Tull

The Muttontown Club sits in East Norwich on Long Island's North Shore, occupying land that reflects the area's estate-era heritage. Alfred H. Tull designed the course, contributing to a regional golf landscape that includes numerous private clubs established during the early-to-mid twentieth century. Tull, a less prominent figure than his Golden Age contemporaries, worked primarily in the Northeast and created layouts that emphasized playability within the natural terrain available to him.
The course navigates rolling topography characteristic of Long Island's glacially formed landscape, with mature tree growth framing holes and defining corridors. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes that provide variety in shot requirements and visual interest without dramatic slopes. Greens and bunkering reflect the design sensibilities of Tull's era, favoring strategic placement over excessive penal features.
The Muttontown Club operates as a private facility serving a membership drawn from the surrounding North Shore communities. The club maintains traditions common to established Long Island private clubs, where golf is central but social and family amenities also play significant roles. Dining and clubhouse activities complement the golf experience in ways typical of clubs founded during this period.
The course remains relatively unknown outside its immediate membership and regional golf circles, having not hosted significant professional or amateur championships that would bring broader recognition. It represents the kind of solid, member-focused design that characterizes many private clubs on Long Island, where the emphasis rests on consistent conditioning and enjoyable daily play rather than tournament challenge or national rankings.
Reviews
Immediately feels like the kind of club that is run by a company thr runs about 100 other clubs, which is to say, it's fine. Perfecly fine. Memorable? Not so much. But a nice day can be had there, no doubt. Conditions were great, and it took a pretty heavy thunderstorm the day before we played and seemed to drain well.
