EAGLE RIDGE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Galena, IL, USA
Designed by Andy North, Roger Packard
The General at Eagle Ridge Golf Club opened in 1992 as the third of the resort's four courses, designed by two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North in collaboration with architect Roger Packard. The course occupies rolling terrain in the hills of northwest Illinois near Galena, where the topography provides significant elevation changes uncommon in much of the state. The routing takes advantage of natural ridgelines and valleys, creating a layout that demands thoughtful club selection and course management on approach shots to elevated or tiered greens.
The design features wide fairways that encourage aggressive play off the tee, but the challenge intensifies around the greens, where contours and falloffs require precision. Several holes play along or across ravines, and the property's wooded character frames many holes while leaving others more open to views across the Galena Territory. Water comes into play on multiple holes, though the course relies more heavily on its natural land movement and green complexes for difficulty.
Eagle Ridge operates as a resort facility with multiple courses, and The General serves as one of the more player-friendly options compared to some of the property's other layouts. The course has hosted regional amateur events and remains a popular destination for golfers visiting the Galena area, which draws tourists for its historic downtown and Mississippi River valley setting. The name references the military history associated with Galena, which was home to Ulysses S. Grant before the Civil War.
Reviews
Played terrible but I was boozing too much. Layout and the elevation changes here are what makes it so high on my rankings.
