ENNISCRONE GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Enniscrone, Sligo, IE
Designed by Donald Steel, Eddie Hackett
The Dunes at Enniscrone is a monumental links, born from the untamed majesty of Ireland's Atlantic coast. Hewn from towering dunes that ripple towards Killala Bay, this is not a course for the faint of heart, nor the easily distracted. The wind, a constant companion, dictates strategy as much as the devilish pot bunkers that lie in wait, eager to swallow errant shots whole. Wide fairways lull you into a false sense of security, for approaches demand unwavering precision to small, contoured greens defended by the elements. It’s a place where a well-struck fade can be a golfer's best friend – and humility, a valuable playing partner.
Eddie Hackett, the prolific Irish course designer, first laid out the original links here in 1918 with nine holes. In the early 2000s, Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie brought his vision to its full potential with nine new holes that take you into the massive dunesland that shapes the character of The Dunes today. This wild stretch of terrain is rumored to have inspired more than one local legend, with whispers of hidden smuggler's coves and ancient folklore woven into the very fabric of the land.
While not a championship venue that regularly hosts major tournaments, The Dunes at Enniscrone is cherished by those who seek an authentic links experience. The club fosters a close-knit community drawn from the surrounding area – a group as welcoming as they are passionate about their course. And on a cold and blustery day, you can always trust the Nineteenth hole to offer a generous helping of Irish stew and spirited conversation, fueled by tales of heroic shots and near-misses.
