THE CURRITUCK CLUB
🇺🇸 Corolla, NC, USA
Designed by Greg Muirhead, Rees Jones
The Currituck Club occupies a distinctive setting in Corolla, along North Carolina's Outer Banks. Designed by Rees Jones with Greg Muirhead and opened in the late 1990s, the course sits on a narrow barrier island where the Atlantic Ocean meets Currituck Sound. This geography shapes the routing, with holes playing through maritime forest, across open dunes, and along wetland edges. The exposed coastal location means wind is a consistent factor in club selection and strategy.
The layout takes advantage of the natural elevation changes found on the Outer Banks, modest by mountain standards but significant for coastal Carolina golf. Several holes offer views across the sound or toward the ocean, and the property's native vegetation—live oaks, yaupon, and sea grasses—frames the playing corridors. Jones, known for his work on U.S. Open venues, incorporated strategic bunkering and green complexes that reward precision while allowing recovery options for resort and member play.
The Currituck Club operates as a private facility within a residential community, though it has historically offered limited access to outside play. The course serves both local members and visitors to the northern Outer Banks, a region better known for beaches and wild horses than golf. The club provides a year-round golf option in an area where coastal weather can be variable, particularly during the shoulder seasons.
Reviews
Wide open resort style golf, what you see is what you get. Doesn’t do anything exceptionally from a design or strategy perspective. The back 9 is much more fun than the front, and the best views and holes on the course are found on it.
