TECINA GOLF
🇪🇸 San Sebastian de La Gomera, Canarias, ES
Designed by Donald Steel, Martin Ebert, Tom MacKenzie
Tecina Golf occupies a dramatic clifftop site on La Gomera, the second-smallest of Spain's Canary Islands, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Donald Steel designed the original layout in the early 1990s, carving holes into volcanic terrain that features steep elevation changes, natural ravines, and indigenous vegetation. The course sits within the grounds of the Hotel Jardin Tecina resort, and its remote island location—La Gomera lies west of Tenerife and requires ferry or small aircraft access—gives it a distinct sense of isolation compared to the more developed Canary Islands golf destinations.
The routing takes full advantage of the coastal topography, with several holes playing along cliff edges and others descending into and climbing out of barrancas, the deep gullies characteristic of the island's eroded landscape. Views extend across the ocean and toward neighboring islands on clear days. Martin Ebert and Tom MacKenzie have contributed renovation work to the course in subsequent years, refining bunkering, green complexes, and drainage to address the challenges of maintaining turf in the island's subtropical microclimate and volcanic soil.
The course serves both resort guests and a small local membership, functioning as the only eighteen-hole facility on La Gomera. The layout demands accurate placement rather than length, as the terrain naturally penalizes wayward shots. Wind from the Atlantic adds variability to club selection and strategy throughout the round.
