TANDRIDGE GOLF CLUB
🏴 Oxted, Surrey, England
Designed by Harry S. Colt
Tandridge Golf Club sits on the North Downs in Surrey, approximately twenty-five miles south of London near the town of Oxted. Harry Colt designed the course in 1924, working with naturally undulating downland terrain that provides both elevation changes and views across the surrounding countryside. The layout occupies a ridge-and-valley landscape typical of the chalk downs, with the routing taking advantage of the natural contours rather than requiring extensive earthmoving.
The course measures around 6,200 yards from the back tees and plays as a par 70. Colt's design emphasizes strategic positioning over length, with several holes requiring careful placement to navigate the slopes and avoid awkward stances. The greens feature the subtle contouring characteristic of Colt's work, rewarding approach shots that find the correct portion of the putting surface. Several holes play along or across the natural folds in the terrain, and the property includes mature woodland that frames many fairways.
Tandridge has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a members' club with a traditional Surrey golf culture. The clubhouse, which predates the golf course, is a Victorian building that serves as the social center for the membership. The course represents a relatively pure example of Colt's heathland and downland design principles, with minimal alteration to the original routing over the decades, though some modernization of bunkering and green surrounds has occurred to accommodate contemporary maintenance practices and playing standards.
Reviews
This course was lovely. My rating is potentially abit low and does not do it justice in its best condition. We played on temp greens mid winter with ice and snow on the course, and it still managed to be a 7.6. The clubhouse was traditional and amazing, the food was great, the pro shop was really nice, got myself a great belt. The logo is class looks great on the balls and marker in my collection. The course was not amazingly interesting or memorable in layout, it’s maybe one of the only downsides I had with this course. The conditions were so good despite not getting to try out the greens or fairways completely. Definitely one I would like to go back and try in better weather.
