TACONIC GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Williamstown, MA, USA
Designed by John Van Kleek, Wayne Stiles
Taconic Golf Club, set against the backdrop of the Purple Mountains in Williamstown, Massachusetts, enjoys a collegiate atmosphere and a rich history entwined with Williams College, giving the club a unique pedigree among New England courses. This classic layout presents a stern but fair test.
Designed in the Golden Age by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek, Taconic offers a parkland experience characterized by subtly contoured greens, strategic bunkering, and mature tree-lined fairways. The course subtly favors a thoughtful approach, with tight, undulating fairways placing a premium on accurate tee shots and precise iron play into well-guarded greens. While not exceedingly long by modern standards, its charm lies in its intricate design and the need for strategic course management.
While not a regular host to major professional events, Taconic's prestige within amateur circles is undeniable. It has been the trusted host for numerous prestigious regional championships and USGA qualifiers, providing a challenging yet rewarding experience for top-level amateurs. The walkable layout and exceptional conditioning have made it a favorite among competitors seeking a true test of golfing skill.
The clubhouse fosters a warm and inviting atmosphere and the club itself enjoys a devoted membership. The 19th Hole is the main focus for those who enjoy good camaraderie, where you'll be hard pressed to pass up an order of Taconic’s famous onion rings after your round.
Reviews
Big big fan of this place.
Tucked into the middle of nowhere, this absolute gem was potentially the best set up for four ball match play I’ve ever been graced by. You’re on a college campus but as soon as you walk up to the first tee it feels like a step back in time, a quieter time. It’s a long walk through Western Mass elevation that continually impresses but requires every part of your game to be clicking. Highly recommend if you ever find yourself casually in the New York part of Massachusetts.
Played many times, mostly in the fall. An absolute gem and must play. Just a very fun course and very tricky green complexes
