NEWMACHAR GOLF CLUB
🏴 Newmachar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Designed by Dave Thomas
Swailend is the second of two eighteen-hole layouts at Newmachar Golf Club, located approximately ten miles north of Aberdeen in the rolling farmland of Aberdeenshire. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in the mid-1990s, the course was developed to complement the club's original Hawkshill layout and accommodate growing demand for golf in the region during that period. Thomas, a former Ryder Cup player who became a prolific course architect across Europe, created a parkland design that works with the natural contours of the Aberdeenshire landscape.
The routing moves through a mix of mature woodland and open agricultural terrain characteristic of this part of northeast Scotland. The course features the kind of strategic bunkering and green complexes typical of Thomas's design approach, with an emphasis on playability for a range of abilities while still presenting challenges for accomplished players. The layout takes advantage of elevation changes across the property, offering views toward the surrounding countryside and, on clear days, glimpses of the North Sea to the east.
Newmachar Golf Club serves both members and visitors, functioning as a popular venue for regional amateur competitions and society outings. The facility benefits from its proximity to Aberdeen while maintaining a rural setting, and the Swailend course provides a contrast to the more exposed links courses found along the nearby Aberdeenshire coast. The club's two courses allow for varied golf experiences within a single visit to this corner of Scotland's northeast.
