SURF GOLF & BEACH CLUB
🇺🇸 North Myrtle Beach, SC, USA
Designed by George Cobb, John LaFoy

The Surf Golf & Beach Club course in North Myrtle Beach was originally designed by George Cobb and later renovated by John LaFoy. Cobb, a prolific mid-century architect responsible for numerous courses throughout the Carolinas and Georgia, created layouts that typically emphasized playability while incorporating the natural terrain of their settings. The course occupies land characteristic of South Carolina's Grand Strand, where relatively flat coastal topography and sandy soil provide good drainage and support the Bermuda grasses common to the region.
The routing reflects the constraints and opportunities of beachside development, with holes laid out among residential areas that have grown up around the course over the decades. Water features appear throughout the design, a typical element of Grand Strand courses where natural wetlands and constructed ponds serve both strategic and aesthetic purposes. The coastal environment means players often contend with wind, particularly when it comes off the Atlantic, adding variability to club selection and shot-making.
John LaFoy's renovation work updated the course to meet contemporary standards while preserving the fundamental character of Cobb's design. LaFoy, based in South Carolina, has worked on numerous courses throughout the region and brings familiarity with the challenges of maintaining and improving layouts in coastal conditions. The Surf Golf & Beach Club operates as part of the broader Myrtle Beach golf market, serving both members and visitors drawn to the area's concentration of courses.
