Sur at Golf del Sur

Golf del Sur occupies a stretch of volcanic terrain on Tenerife's southern coast, designed by Spanish professionals Manuel Piñero and Pepe Gancedo. The course opened in the late 1980s as part of a resort development in what was then a relatively undeveloped area of the island. The routing takes advantage of the natural lava formations and coastal exposure, with fairways carved through dark volcanic rock and native vegetation characteristic of the Canary Islands landscape.

The design reflects the collaborative approach of its architects—Piñero, a Ryder Cup player and tour professional, brought competitive playing experience, while Gancedo contributed architectural expertise developed across numerous Spanish and international projects. The layout features strategic bunkering and elevated greens that require careful club selection in the coastal winds. Several holes play along or near the Atlantic shoreline, where the trade winds become a significant factor in shot-making.

The course serves both resort guests and local members, functioning as a year-round facility in Tenerife's mild climate. The volcanic soil and arid conditions create firm playing surfaces distinct from northern European parkland courses. Golf del Sur has hosted various professional and amateur events on the European developmental tours, taking advantage of the winter season when mainland Europe becomes less playable. The surrounding area has grown considerably since the course opened, with residential development and additional golf facilities now part of the broader San Miguel de Abona golf corridor.
