Sunningdale at Sunningdale Country Club

Sunningdale Country Club occupies a wooded property in Scarsdale, a suburb in Westchester County north of New York City. A.W. Tillinghast designed the course in the 1920s during his most prolific period, when he was creating numerous layouts throughout the metropolitan New York area and across the northeastern United States. The club takes its name from the famous English heathland courses, though the setting here is decidedly different—rolling Westchester terrain with mature hardwoods and the natural elevation changes characteristic of the region.

Tillinghast's design philosophy emphasized strategic variety and natural routing that worked with existing landforms rather than against them. At Sunningdale, the course moves through corridors of trees with greens that typically feature the subtle contouring and thoughtful bunkering associated with his work from this era. The layout requires accuracy from the tee and rewards players who can position their approach shots to specific quadrants of the greens.
