STURGEON VALLEY GOLF & COUNTRY
🇨🇦 St. Albert, Alberta, CA
Designed by Bill Robinson
Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club sits in the rolling parkland northwest of Edmonton, near St. Albert, where the Sturgeon River valley provides natural elevation changes and mature tree cover. Designed by Bill Robinson and opened in the mid-1970s, the course takes advantage of the river valley terrain, routing holes through stands of spruce and poplar with fairways that move across ridges and down into lower corridors. The layout reflects Robinson's Alberta work from that era, emphasizing strategic bunkering and greens that reward accurate approach play.
The course measures over 6,800 yards from the back tees and presents a traditional parkland test with tree-lined fairways that demand position off the tee. Several holes play along or across the natural contours of the valley, creating variety in stance and club selection. The greens are typically mid-sized with subtle breaks, and Robinson incorporated water features on a handful of holes where the terrain naturally accommodated them. The routing returns to the clubhouse at the turn, a common feature in his designs.
Sturgeon Valley serves as a private club for the St. Albert area and has hosted regional amateur competitions over the decades. The membership maintains the course in firm condition suitable for year-round play during Alberta's golf season, and the club offers traditional dining and social facilities. The setting remains relatively secluded despite proximity to suburban growth, preserving the wooded character that defines the round.
