The course traces its origins to a Donald Ross design from the early-to-mid twentieth century, part of Ross's prolific work across the Carolinas during his decades based at Pinehurst. Ross Forbes, Donald Ross's nephew and longtime associate who continued his uncle's design practice after his death in 1948, later contributed modifications and updates to the layout. The course reflects the characteristic Ross principles of strategic bunkering, subtly contoured greens, and routing that works with natural landforms. The property sits within the Sandhills region of North Carolina, sharing the sandy soils and rolling pine-covered terrain common to courses in the Pinehurst area. This topography provides good drainage and firm playing conditions typical of Sandhills golf.
