STONE HARBOR GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Cape May Court House, NJ, USA
Designed by Desmond Muirhead
Stone Harbor Golf Club sits in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, serving the southern shore region of the state near the resort communities of Stone Harbor and Avalon. Designed by Desmond Muirhead and opened in 1965, the course reflects the architect's early work before his later ventures into more sculptural and thematic designs. Muirhead, who collaborated with Jack Nicklaus on several prominent projects and later became known for unconventional routing concepts, created a layout here that works with the relatively flat coastal plain terrain typical of Cape May County.
The course occupies land characteristic of southern New Jersey's barrier island region—modest elevation changes, sandy soils, and vegetation adapted to maritime conditions. Water features appear throughout the routing, both natural and constructed, and the design incorporates these hazards into the strategic demands of several holes. The layout provides a straightforward test of golf without dramatic topography, relying instead on green complexes, bunkering, and the management of wind that frequently affects play in this coastal setting.
Stone Harbor functions as a semi-private facility, offering access to both members and daily-fee players during much of the season. The club serves the local year-round community as well as the summer population that swells Cape May County's shore towns. Its location makes it a convenient option for golfers visiting the southern New Jersey beaches who seek a round away from the more congested resort areas closer to the Atlantic.
Reviews
Very overrated. Very hard. Layout is silly at times. Too much manufactured land. Rolling hills in the rough. Small boring greens. Easy to lose a ball all day. 1 or 2 fun holes. Better places to play near the shore towns.
