St Mellons occupies rolling parkland on the eastern outskirts of Cardiff, where the land rises gently from the coastal plain toward the Welsh interior. Harry S. Colt laid out the original course in the 1930s, with J.S.F. Morrison contributing to later revisions. The design reflects Colt's characteristic attention to natural contour and strategic bunkering, routing holes across varied terrain that includes mature woodland, open fairways, and modest elevation changes. The course measures around 6,400 yards from the back tees and presents a traditional parkland test that rewards accuracy over distance.

The layout moves through a mix of tree-lined corridors and more exposed sections, with several holes playing along or across slopes that introduce uneven lies and require thoughtful club selection. Colt's bunker placement typically forces decisions from the tee, and the greens feature enough movement to complicate approach play without resorting to extreme undulation.
