Reviews
Had a Day yesterday at Devereux Emmet’s masterpiece. Long Island stands alone as the Mecca for unparalleled great golf courses in America. Everyone knows of NGLA, Shinnecock, Friars, Maidstone….the list goes on and on. But, only the true golf course crazy’s know of St George’s. Often overlooked on LI, St George’s Oozes old school architecture. Emmet, who helped CB Macdonald at NGLA, had a great piece of property to work with at St George’s. While short from the back tees for today’s standards (6,363 yards), St George’s defense are its green complexes that play FIRM and FAST! While some complain of the number of blind shots and penal bunkering, I found it to be both exciting and challenging. St George’s is beautiful and an absolute blast to play, if you ever get the opportunity to experience it……GO!
Some call it “Minnie Shinny”, the George is a fun course with a cool layout. I consider it the twin of Huntington Country Club, as it shares many similar design aspects a classic Deveruex Emmet would have. Fast green and lots of bunkers make it a fun play.
