HOUSE ON THE ROCK RESORT
🇺🇸 Spring Green, WI, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.

The Springs course at House on the Rock Resort sits in the rolling terrain of southwestern Wisconsin's Driftless Area, a region that escaped glaciation and retains distinctive topography characterized by steep ridges, narrow valleys, and natural springs. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course in the 1970s during the height of his career, bringing his signature style to a landscape quite different from the flatter Midwest terrain found elsewhere in the region. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes and wooded corridors, with holes moving through mature hardwood forests and opening to views across the Wisconsin River valley.
Jones was known for strategic bunkering, elevated greens, and demanding approach shots that reward precision, and these elements appear throughout the Springs layout. The course features the architect's characteristic large, contoured greens and fairway bunkers positioned to challenge tee shots at specific landing areas. Water comes into play on several holes, both from natural springs that give the course its name and from constructed hazards. The property's natural movement provides variety in stance and shot selection uncommon in the upper Midwest.
House on the Rock Resort takes its name from the nearby tourist attraction built by Alex Jordan Jr., a complex of architectural curiosities perched atop Deer Shelter Rock. The resort operates as a public facility, offering golf alongside lodging and dining in a relatively remote setting. The Springs serves as the resort's championship layout and hosts regional amateur competitions, drawing golfers to an area better known for its scenic byways and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin than for golf destinations.
Reviews
I like parts of House on the Rock and I don't like parts of it. Played the original 18 recently and played the North 9 several years ago. The North 9 was brutal and remember that you need to be straight off the tee. Course has shared green for two holes which is very different. A fairly amount of doglegs which helps to break up layout. It seems fairly well priced for location and conditions.
