OGLEBAY RESORT
🇺🇸 Wheeling, WV, USA
Designed by Arnold Palmer
Oglebay's Speidel - Arnold Palmer Course, carved into the rolling hills of West Virginia, whispers of a bygone era when the King himself walked its fairways, officially opening the course in 2000. The late-20th century design, a collaborative effort of Palmer's design team, presents a decidedly American parkland experience, marked by mature trees that frame generous fairways and subtly undulating greens. A premium is placed on distance control and accurate approach shots, especially to greens that possess enough contour to challenge even the most skilled putters. While never hosting a major championship, the Palmer Course at Oglebay holds a prominent spot in regional golf circles for its playability and scenic views of the surrounding Appalachian landscape.
The layout is known to test players to manage the ball and take advantage of some of the longer par 5's. As a whole the course is balanced and there are very few quirks or 'blind' shots with the exception of a few elevated tees that can make it difficult to navigate the layout for first time players.
The club atmosphere is casual and relaxed, reflecting the genuine hospitality of the Ohio Valley. While the Speidel - Arnold Palmer Course may not be a household name in the world of championship golf, it remains a beloved test for those who appreciate a well-conditioned course. The club is known for their annual Palmer Cup where local golfers compete at the Palmer Course and the Jones Course, where they compete for local bragging rights in a fun atmosphere.
