SOUTHERNESS GOLF CLUB
🏴 Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Designed by Clyde Johnston
Southerness occupies a distinctive peninsula jutting into the Solway Firth on Scotland's southwest coast, roughly fifteen miles south of Dumfries. Designed by Mackenzie Ross and opened in 1947, the course represents one of the architect's most accomplished links layouts, created on naturally undulating linksland that extends along the shoreline. The routing takes full advantage of the coastal setting, with several holes playing directly beside the water and offering views across the Solway to the Lake District hills in England.
The course measures over 6,500 yards from the championship tees and features classic links characteristics: firm, fast-running turf, natural dunes and hollows, and exposure to prevailing winds that can dramatically alter playing conditions. The opening holes move inland before the routing turns seaward, with the stretch from the 12th through 15th running closest to the shore and generally considered the most memorable sequence. These holes demand precise shotmaking in what can be challenging wind conditions, with the Solway Firth providing both scenic backdrop and strategic influence.
Southerness has hosted numerous Scottish amateur championships and regional competitions over the decades, establishing itself as a respected championship venue within Scottish golf. The club operates as a members' club but welcomes visitors, maintaining the traditional links experience in a relatively remote coastal setting that has remained largely unchanged since Ross completed his design in the immediate postwar years.
