THE COUNTRY CLUB OF SOUTH CAROLINA
🇺🇸 Florence, SC, USA
Designed by Ed Seay, Ellis Maples

The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence occupies rolling Pee Dee region terrain characteristic of South Carolina's coastal plain transition zone. Ellis Maples, a prolific mid-century architect who worked extensively throughout the Carolinas, designed the original layout. Ed Seay, who spent much of his career with Arnold Palmer's design firm before establishing his own practice, later contributed to the course through renovation or expansion work. The collaboration reflects two generations of American golf design, with Maples's traditional routing sensibilities meeting Seay's more contemporary approach to strategic bunkering and green complexes.
The course moves through stands of longleaf pine and hardwoods typical of the region, with elevation changes modest but sufficient to create variety in stance and perspective. Water features appear on several holes, integrated into the design in ways that define playing corridors and create risk-reward decisions on approach shots. The layout serves a private membership drawn from Florence and surrounding communities in the Pee Dee, functioning as a social and recreational hub for the area.
Florence sits along Interstate 95 between the Myrtle Beach resort corridor and the state capital in Columbia, giving the club a location that has connected it to regional amateur competitions over the decades. The facility includes traditional clubhouse amenities and practice areas that support member play and occasional tournament hosting within the South Carolina golf community.
