WHITEFISH GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Whitefish, MT, USA
Designed by John Steidel

South at Whitefish Golf Club, carved from the undulating Montana landscape just outside Whitefish, represents a compelling blend of traditional values and modern playability. The original design, dating back to the mid-20th century, reflects the era's emphasis on strategic bunkering and natural integration with the existing terrain. While not a links-style course, its generous fairways and subtle elevation changes often reward thoughtful approaches over brute force, challenging golfers to navigate its subtly contoured greens. The course generally favors a right-to-left ball flight, though blind shots and cleverly placed hazards necessitate a keen understanding of distance control.
While not a championship venue of international renown, South has remained a steadfast fixture of the local golfing community for decades, fostering a loyal membership known for its relaxed atmosphere and unpretentious approach to the game. Generations of Montanans have honed their skills on these grounds, drawn to the stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and the challenging, yet fair, layout.
Over the years, subtle renovations have kept the course in excellent condition, improving drainage and updating green complexes without sacrificing the original character. The clubhouse, a humble but inviting structure, is rumored to be the site of countless post-round storytelling sessions, where local lore and golfing triumphs are celebrated with equal gusto. It’s also known for a particularly potent local brew and some legendary fish tacos.
