THE LOS ANGELES COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA, USA
Designed by Geoff Shackelford
Where Hollywood glitz meets golfing grit, Los Angeles Country Club's South Course stands as a monument to classic Golden Age design in the heart of the city's affluent Westside. Carved from the rolling hills and barrancas that define the landscape, the course, while long, favors strategic play over brute power and punishes errant shots that stray from its undulating fairways.
Originally designed by Herbert Fowler, with later refinements by George C. Thomas Jr., the South Course presents a formidable challenge with its subtly contoured greens and strategically placed bunkers that dictate approach angles. This is a course that requires imagination and the ability to shape shots, a stark contrast to the manicured perfection often found in modern championship venues. The US Open returned here in 2023, testament to its playability and challenge to the pros.
LACC’s membership includes titans of industry and entertainment, a reflection of its prime location and unparalleled pedigree. The club has long been a haven for those seeking privacy and exclusivity, a place where deals are brokered, and legends are made, all within the confines of its storied grounds. The club is known for its no denim policy, a nod to its enduring traditions and commitment to maintaining a certain level of decorum.
Nestled amongst the Beverly Hills skyline, the South Course, while not always discussed among the very upper echelons of American golf, serves as a reminder of a bygone era, a time when golf course architecture prioritized strategic thought over sheer distance and playability.
Reviews
Obviously loses out thanks to the North but on it's own it would be one of the best in the city. A very fun round. Easier than the N by a good margin.
An extremely good companion to the North, the South is a fun and playable version, with many similar shots and the same incredible oasis directly in downtown LA.
