RANCHO MURIETA COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Rancho Murieta, CA, USA
Designed by Ted Robinson Sr.

The South Course at Rancho Murieta Country Club opened in 1970 as part of a master-planned community development in the Sacramento Valley foothills, approximately twenty-five miles southeast of California's capital. Ted Robinson Sr., a prolific California architect known for incorporating water features into his designs, routed this course through gently rolling terrain dotted with mature oaks and bordered by the Cosumnes River. The layout reflects Robinson's characteristic style from this period, with water coming into play on multiple holes and strategic bunkering that rewards accurate shotmaking.
The course occupies land that transitions from open valley floor to more wooded sections, creating variety in both playing corridors and visual character. Several holes move through stands of valley oak and blue oak, while others play across more exposed terrain with views toward the Sierra Nevada foothills. The routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes, though the overall terrain remains relatively gentle compared to mountain courses farther east. Robinson designed the course to accommodate a range of skill levels while providing enough challenge for competitive play within the club.
Rancho Murieta operates as a private residential club serving the planned community, and the South Course shares the property with a companion North Course also designed by Robinson. The club has hosted regional amateur events and serves as the primary golf amenity for residents. The South Course represents a typical example of Robinson's work during California's golf development boom of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when numerous courses were built as centerpieces of residential communities throughout the state.
Reviews
One of two RTJ2 courses on site. Typical of his work lots of bunkers contoured greens and some water hazards. Good ground movement challenging course research online to check conditions I heard they had some challenges in recent years. If in good shape definitely worth a play
