CANOE BROOK COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Summit, NJ, USA
Designed by C. H. Alison, Hal Purdy, Rees Jones
Canoe Brook Country Club’s South Course, in the rolling hills of Short Hills, New Jersey, has been a proving ground for generations of golfers since its inception in the early 20th century, reflecting a quiet but enduring pedigree within the region. The course's parkland layout, punctuated by mature trees and subtly undulating fairways, presents a classic, yet demanding, test of golf. It subtly favors a strategic approach over brute force, rewarding thoughtful course management rather than simply penalizing errant shots.
The South Course bears the mark of esteemed architect Walter Travis, whose Golden Age design principles shaped its initial character. Subsequent refinements by other notable architects have ensured its continued relevance. Despite its understated profile compared to other championship venues, the South Course hosted the 1936 PGA Championship, where Denny Shute emerged victorious.
Canoe Brook distinguishes itself, not through overt displays of grandeur, but by cultivating a membership steeped in tradition and understated elegance. The club quietly embraces its history and continues to adapt to the evolving game. Known within its membership for the after-round comradery and the club's famous Manhattan cocktail, it remains a sanctuary for those who appreciate a classic golf experience.
Reviews
Canoe Brook South is admittedly little brother to the Championship North, but still provides a great experience to the shotmaker. With 5 Par 5’s and 5 Par 3’s. The South provides a unique array of shots.
As far as 36 hole facilities go, this is a solid second course. Some really interesting holes and some boring ones. Fun bunch of par 3s and fun par 5s. The 4s are a little monotonous.
When the South firms up after a long summer of member guests, and gets reseeded when everyone is at the beach, the south peaks. When the college football season is around and leaves just start to brown, maybe a quarter zip in the morning, nothing beats it. Firm fairways, tough but fair rough, pristine sand (not on monday) and very fast but true greens. I love everything about the south course, starting with the ride over in the van and a chat with Steve.
