GOLF SON PARC MENORCA
🇪🇸 Mercadal, Islas Baleares, ES
Designed by Dave Thomas
Golf Son Parc Menorca occupies a coastal setting on the northern shore of Menorca, the second-largest of Spain's Balearic Islands. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in the early 1980s, the course was among the first modern layouts on an island known more for its beaches and archaeological sites than for golf. Thomas, a prolific British architect who worked extensively across continental Europe during this period, routed the eighteen holes across relatively flat terrain near the resort development of Son Parc, incorporating the Mediterranean landscape of low vegetation and rocky outcrops characteristic of the region.
The layout plays through corridors of pine and scrub vegetation, with several holes offering views toward the sea. The terrain lacks significant elevation change, and the design relies on strategic bunkering and the prevailing coastal winds to provide challenge. Water features appear on a handful of holes, and the generally open character allows the wind to influence play throughout much of the year. The course serves both resort visitors and local members, functioning as one of the few year-round golf facilities on Menorca.
Son Parc remains a modest but established presence in the Balearic golf landscape, offering a straightforward test in a setting shaped by the island's natural environment and Mediterranean climate. The course provides access to the game in a region where golf infrastructure is limited compared to neighboring Mallorca or mainland Spain.
